Community Projects in Literature - CW 675/CW 875

CW 675/CW 875 Community Projects in Literature Leads

CW 675/875 Community Projects in Literature gives you, the student the opportunity to gain experience in the fields of publication, teaching and arts administration, which will make valuable additions to your resume. Though each community project will be individually shaped, you will make a commitment of at least six hours a week for the length of the semester to earn three units credit. If you make that commitment, you will be expected to keep it.  The instructor will approve the project and confer with the project supervisor. (Most of these organizations have had both good and bad experiences with our students, and have asked us to send them ONLY reliable people. Be reliable.)

Use this list of organizations as a guide to finding a community project, or you can find one on your own. This list includes on-campus opportunities, such as the Poetry Center. You also may create your own project as well; for example, teaching writing workshops in community, institution or school settings or creating a reading series.

Typically, the organizations listed will ask you for a brief resume; try to give them some idea of the kinds of experience you already have.  For example, did you work on a campus journal, can you operate a computer, file and write clearly?

NOTE that some of these organizations might not have current listings, though we do reach out to them every year.  Please let us know via email, cwriting@sfsu.edu, if any of these leads are dead ends; we’re grateful for your help keeping the list current!

Based in Oakland, Writing Ourselves Whole has offered creative writing workshops for trauma survivors and others since 2003. I offer generative writing groups and manuscript groups, both in-person and online. Writers engage in transformative writing practice in community in order to restory individual trauma experience and reconnect those parts of ourselves we are trained to hide. Through writing together and offering one another deep generosity and kind witness, we find language for what was never meant to be spoken, and create beauty from the "unspeakable" stuff of our lives. I would be interested in working with students who have (or want to develop) social media outreach skills, promotional skills, workshop facilitation skills and organizational development skills. I would be happy to work with someone who wanted to participate in writing groups, someone seeking mentorship/support around their writing group facilitation skills, especially when working with traumatized communities. You can find more information about Writing Ourselves Whole on the Writing Ourselves Whole website, and I can be reached by phone at (415) 608-3398.
